Day 28 – A Song That Makes You Feel Guilty – John Lennon – War Is Over (Happy Xmas)

When I first heard this song as a child, I did not understand exactly what the lyrics meant. As an adult, I have started to understand the complexity of the message that the lyrics convey. This song was written by John and Yoko to try to tell the people of the world that although no single person can induce World Peace on their own, if we all work together, and start with simple, often miniscule tasks, and if the people effected by these tasks then pay them forward, that World Peace is achievable.

For example, if someone was to buy a meal or a hot coffee for a homeless person, it could be the difference of life and death for the homeless person, simply getting some nourishment or some warmth could mean that they do not freeze to death that night whilst sleeping in an alley way. To the person buying the meal or coffee, it is simply $5, but to the homeless person, it is so much more. If people started looking after one another, and not just looking out for themselves in the selfish way that may people do, then World Peace is achievable.

The clip for this song shows the atrocities of war, and their effects on the children, the old and the frail. The innocent victims of war that are often forgotten about and conveniently left off the evening news, in fear that the viewer may not like what they see during their dinner-time viewing, and switch channels, losing advertising dollars for the network. These children often have no choice over where they live or play, some lose their limbs, others lose their lives. many have already lost their families.

This song makes me feel guilty, as no matter how much I actually do, it will never be enough. However, I will continue to buy meals for homeless, provide them with a blanket or a hand-knitted scarf, or simply donate to a charity to help them in ways I cannot.

Enough is Enough.

Axeman – War Is Over (Happy Xmas) …my own version of this song…

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun

And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong

And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let’s stop all the fight

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
And a new one just begun

Ans so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear

War is over over
If you want it
War is over
Now…
