Day 18 – A Song that You Wish You Heard On The Radio – Guns N Roses – Estranged

One of Guns N Roses undiscovered gems, “Estranged” Appeared on the “Use Your Illusion II” album, and rarely sees radio play due to its length of 9:24.

This song has 3 parts, all of which I love for different reasons. The first is the ‘Angry’ part, where Axl sings of how things are getting messy, and his daughter is being kept in the dark, dragged through the courts and being used as a pawn. Then there is the middle section, which Slash has on guitar to sound like dolphins. In the clip, dolphins are shown swimming, saving Axl from drowning (this makes more sense if you watch the clip) The last section of the song tells of how Axl will learn to get-by, knowing he cannot see his daughter every day, but to appreciate the times that he will see her. Despite the rather tacky description, this song is an epic B-Side, and one that should have had its own single.

Though Axl Rose has the only writing credit for this song, in the album’s CD booklet he offered this telling dedication: “Slash, thanks for the killer guitar melodies.” Slash has quite a bit of freedom on this track, doing some killer riffs, not to mention his awesome parts in the video clip.

The clip was one of the most expensive clips to be made to date, and included scenes filmed in Axl’s house, the use of SWAT, closing of Sunset Boulevard, filming on a Supertanker in the middle of the ocean, dolphins, an indoor wave pool, as well as many other money-sucking scenes.

The lyrics were penned by Axl at a time when he was going through a messy divorce. The scenes that show Axl curled up in a hidden nook as SWAT burst in searching for him were apparently semi-accurate. The room shown was his daughter’s room. When his ex-wife took his daughter away, he would often go into her room and cry himself to sleep. Friends were concerned on numerous occasions that he would harm himself, so police were called out a few times to check on him. During filming, Axl was in the hidden nook for a few hours as they shot and reshot the scene. He eventually fell asleep up there, saying later he was at peace, and just exhausted by the days filming. The scene shown in the clip is the one where he is actually asleep.

Guns N Roses – Estranged

When you’re talkin to yourself
And nobody’s home
You can fool yourself
You came in this world alone

So nobody ever told you baby
How it was gonna be
So what’ll happen to you baby
Guess we’ll have to wait and see
One, two

Old at heart but I’m only 28
And I’m much too young
To let love break my heart
Young at heart but it’s getting much too late
To find ourselves so far apart

I don’t know how you’re s’posed
To find me lately
An what more could you ask from me
How could you say that I never needed you
When you took everything
Said you took everything from me

Young at heart an it gets so hard to wait
When no one I know can seem to help me now
Old at heart but I musn’t hesitate
If I’m to find my own way out

Still talkin’ to myself and nobody’s home

So nobody ever told us baby
How it was gonna be
So what’ll happen to us baby
Guess we’ll have to wait and see

When I find out all the reasons
Maybe I’ll find another way
Find another day
With all the changing seasons of my life
Maybe I’ll get it right next time
An now that you’ve been broken down
Got your head out of the clouds
You’re back down on the ground
And you don’t talk so loud
An you don’t walk so proud
Any more, and what for

Well I jumped into the river too many times
to make it home
I’m out here on my own, an drifting all alone
If it doesn’t show give it time
To read between the lines
‘Cause I see the storm getting closer
And the waves they get so high
Seems everything We’ve ever known’s here
Why must it drift away and die

I’ll never find anyone to replace you
Guess I’ll have to make it thru, this time
Oh this time
Without you

I knew the storm was getting closer
And all my friends said I was high
But everything we’ve ever known’s here
I never wanted it to die
