Day 06 – A Song That Reminds You Of Somewhere – Alicia Keys – Empire State Of Mind II

Well, the most recent song that reminds me of somewhere would have to be “Alicia Keys – Empire State Of Mind II”. This is partly because this song came out roughly the same time that we were in New York City, and partly because the locals played it to death when we were there. This song was heard almost every day we were there, and prior to arriving, I do not recall ever hearing it (although looking back, I have heard the Jay-Z Version a few times…) The first time I remember hearing this song was in Times Square on our first day. It was being piped through the sound system there, not too loud, but loud enough for people to notice, and a few people to be able to sing along to it.

At first, I disliked the song (as with a lot of ‘modern’ music, however listening to this song closer, I realise it is a rather deep song, with lyrics that are at a very personal level for Alicia Keys. Alicia grew up in NYC, coming from a broken home. Her mother obviously worked hard to provide for her, getting her music training, an education and a good start in life. After a lot of hard work, Alicia signed a record deal, and lifted herself up to stardom.

This song is speaking about how New York is a ‘Concrete Jungle, where dreams are made of’, telling that although there are a lot of people who make it big from NYC, it is a modern day jungle, and as such, people can be swallowed up, forgotten and not given their chance. This song speaks of New York’s energy, the life-force of this city of wonder. Lights. People. Buildings as far as the eye can see. The energy experienced in the streets of this city during the day and indeed, during the nights of any day of the week is something to be experienced. New York never sleeps, and as such, is my ideal city.

If I ever decided to move away from Melbourne Australia, I would choose New York City. As an insomniac from way back, this city understands me. If I want to go out and do something, see a movie, go to a bar, get a bite to eat etc, New York is the place to be! Everything at your doorstep, or very close by, no need for a car, and never a dull moment.

My Trip

I ❤ NY

Empire State Of Mind (Part II) Lyrics

Ooohh New York x2

Grew up in a town that is famous as the place of movie scenes
Noise was always loud, there are sirens all around and the streets are mean
If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere, that's what they say
Seeing my face in lights or my name on marquees found down on Broadway

Even if it ain’t all it seems, I got a pocketful of dreams
Baby, I'm from New York
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothing you can't do
Now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Hear it for New York, New York, New York!

On the avenue, there ain't never a curfew, ladies work so hard
Such a melting pot, on the corner selling rock, preachers pray to God
Hail a gypsy cab, takes me down from Harlem to the Brooklyn Bridge
Some will sleep tonight with a hunger far more than an empty fridge

I'm gonna make it by any means, I got a pocketful of dreams
Baby, I'm from New York
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothing you can't do
Now you're in New York
These street will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Hear it for New York, New York, New York!

One hand in the air for the big city,
Street lights, big dreams all looking pretty
No place in the world that can compare
Put your lighters in the air, everybody say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

In New York
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothing you can't do
Now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Now you're in New York!

Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothing you can't do
Now you're in New York
These street will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Hear it for New York!
